Non-runner Carrie takes on half marathon in memory of her close friend
Carrie Stevens will be lacing up her running shoes for the Torbay Half Marathon on September 29 in support of Rowcroft Hospice. Carrie is taking on this epic challenge to honour her dear friend Ali (pictured above), who received care from the hospice before she passed away in May. In this blog and describing herself as “not a runner”, Carries shares her nervousness and excitement, expressing what it means to her to pay tribute to Ali and make her family and friends proud of her remarkable running challenge.
Channelling Ali’s strength and energy
“My beautiful friend Ali Wheatland sadly lost her fight to cervical cancer in May 2024,” says Carrie (pictured right in photo with Ali, at a fancy dress party). “Throughout her illness, Ali was so courageous and strong, never giving up her hope or fight to live. After she passed away, I was left with a profound feeling of wanting to do something in her honour. Though running is something I have done in the past, taking on a half marathon is a significant challenge for me. However, I remember how Ali got on and worked hard to achieve anything she wanted, and this has given me the boost to push myself and channel her inner strength and energy.”
Prepping for a half marathon debut
“I’ve never run a half marathon before, so it feels like a huge challenge. However, it’s a challenge I know I will feel proud of when I get over the finish line.
“I have already started running regularly in the week and will join some friends who have completed marathons before to make sure I am in the best position to finish the race in September.”
Running with purpose and pride
“I am feeling nervous about how big the challenge is, but I’m also really excited to achieve something so incredible, especially since I am not a ‘runner’. Doing this in memory of Ali and hopefully making all her family and friends proud means a lot to me.
“The care Ali received blew us all away. Respecting all her wishes, the compassion and patience Rowcroft showed Ali and her loved ones amazed us as we navigated through the darkest journey. Until you or someone you love needs hospice care, it’s easy to overlook this essential part of our healthcare system. That’s why I feel so strongly about raising awareness for Rowcroft.”
The joy of giving back
“My advice for anyone interested in fundraising for Rowcroft is to just go for it; you’ll never regret doing something to raise awareness for such a good cause. There’s something to gain for everyone when taking on a challenge like this.”
