A 2-day course to support experienced NHS community practitioners in conversation with patients facing serious illness

Course Aim & Objectives:

To prepare you to practice communicating with others at an advanced level and to develop ways of handling situations that you find most difficult. These may include, for example, communicating significant news to others, responding to anger or collusion.

The course is derived from Maguire Communications Skills training meeting the National benchmarks and competencies for Advanced Communication Skills.

Applicants will need to have achieved an intermediate level of communication skills and be prepared to practice skills within a small facilitated group to enable you to:

  • Understand the evidence-base.
  • Recognise the impact of attitudes and beliefs within the education process.
  • Tailor communication to patient needs.
  • Identify relevant communication challenges exploring ways to resolve them.
  • Practice skills in a safe setting.
  • Consider transferring learning to your workplace.

Cost:

This workshop is free and HEE funded for experienced Devon NHS Community staff
