A special delivery for Alice

Alice’s inspiring story of strength and treasured moments

We had a very special delivery at Rowcroft Hospice one sunny morning this autumn: a box filled to the brim with treats for Alice, one of our patients who was being cared for in our Inpatient Unit. The box was a ‘memory box’ put together by the charity Willow Foundation, an organisation that supports patients with a terminal illness to make lasting memories. Now back at home, Alice shares her journey of being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July and reflects on how the hospice helped her to focus on embracing the present and valuing every moment with her loved ones.

A wonderful box of treats

“It felt like Christmas had come early when I received these amazing gifts from Willow,” said Alice. “The gifts are so thoughtful and generous, and they will make a huge difference. I’ll be able to create some really special moments and lasting memories with my three young children and husband.”

As well as having a star named after her, Alice received pamper items for herself and her husband as well as some goodies for her children. This included some play putty for a fun craft session, a manicure set for a pamper party and some forget-me-not seeds to plant in the garden.

“I felt very touched by the thoughtfulness they put into creating something so special,” said Alice. “It’s heartwarming to be able to give these treats to my family, and I really looked forward to bringing the box home and enjoying everything with them.”

Alice’s journey with Rowcroft

“Before going to Rowcroft, I was in a lot of pain and had lost my appetite,” says Alice. “The nurses at Rowcroft worked with me to manage my pain, slowly adjusting my treatment so I could regain some strength. Thanks to them, I felt able to go home again and be with my family. Their support has been absolutely incredible.”

Cherishing every moment

“My focus is now on taking care of myself gently and holistically, nurturing both my body and mind. Rowcroft has given me the space to regain some strength and gain a new perspective – I want to live fully in the present and give as much of myself as I can to the people I love. I’m at total peace with passing away – I have no fear of it. My priority is my quality of life in the here and now, so I can cherish my time with those around me. I turned 40 in September but was very ill at the time so I have just had a proper birthday bash at home, surrounded by all my loved ones, around 85 people in total! These are the moments I want to enjoy with everyone while I can.”

Receiving care and compassion at Rowcroft

“The support I’ve received from Rowcroft has been incredible – I’m just blown away. I’ve been amazed by how the hospice organised things for my return home so that I would be comfortable and have all I need. To show my appreciation, I’ve been donating what I can. I’ve bought some lovely Rowcroft honey and knitted hearts. Every interaction I’ve had with the staff has been nothing short of beautiful – they handle everything with care and compassion.”

Strength in acceptance

“I know I have no control over my cancer – I can only manage it as best I can. In a way, there’s comfort in knowing it’s out of your hands. I’ve accepted my circumstances, but if I can make any small difference in the time I have, that would mean the world. I hope that by sharing my story and raising awareness for Rowcroft, I can help the hospice and its patients.”
