Paul’s memory takes root on Rowcroft’s tree
For Kate Holmes, widow of former Gulls football star Paul, the Memory Tree in Rowcroft’s sanctuary is a place of comfort and remembrance. Since Paul’s passing last year, the tree has offered Kate and her family a space to honour his life and reflect on cherished memories. With its engraved plaques and beautiful jewel-coloured glass leaves, the Memory Tree stands as a visual tribute to loved ones. For Kate and her family, Paul’s leaf is a poignant reminder of the love they shared, how his memory continues to live on, and of the hospice that supported them all through the toughest of times.
A place of comfort and calm
“The tree is a welcoming sight as you enter the serenity of the Sanctuary,” says Kate. “As a family, we spent time there with Paul – sometimes together, sometimes on our own. It provided us with comfort and a sense of calm. For me, it was a place to gather my thoughts and find those much-needed five minutes to just grieve. Even though Paul was still with us, we knew what was coming, so the grief began early, with him a part of it.
“We would sit together looking at the leaves – the beautiful glass reflections and colours, each with little plaques bearing names and messages. These leaves honoured so many loved ones, while also supporting the invaluable work of the hospice and its amazing teams.”
Honouring Paul
“We asked Paul if he wanted a leaf, half-expecting a flippant reply, but instead, he answered seriously that he would. He gave us an idea of where he wanted his leaf placed and the colour of the glass, all while making sure we would set up a direct debit to donate each month to the hospice. Paul would often say, ‘I’m going to walk down to the tree’, using it as a goal to keep moving and reach it, even as he became less able. He wanted to be remembered on the tree – although he drew the line at filling out the form himself!”
Paul’s place in the Rowcroft story
“The Memory Tree provides us with a visual focal point, helping each of us in different ways. I have visited it a few times, and the children know it’s there. They like knowing he’s there in words now that he’s no longer with us in person. He is part of the Rowcroft story, just as Rowcroft is part of ours – a story of the most amazing, kind, and caring man who was unique, with no filter, and would do anything for anyone! He was so loved.”
Forming precious memories
“The leaf depicts life, and to us, his memory continues to grow. Talking with Paul about the Memory Tree, the glass leaves, and the Sanctuary itself gave us another precious memory, joining the others we were lucky enough to make while spending time in Rowcroft’s Inpatient Unit. Choosing the leaf, the words, and finally placing it on the tree was a comfort and a focus for me and the children. It gave us a job and a purpose, ensuring that we honoured Paul’s wishes.”
