Inclusivity at Rowcroft Hospice: more than just a policy

By Rowcroft’s CEO Mark Hawkins

Inclusivity isn’t just a policy or a box to tick – it’s about recognising and valuing the diversity that makes up our workplaces, our communities, and our society. It’s about fostering an environment where every individual, regardless of their background or identity, feels a genuine sense of belonging, respect, and opportunity.

The nine protected characteristics – age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation – are not about ‘some people’ or ‘others.’ They reflect the rich diversity of human experience. At different points in life, we all intersect with them in some way, whether personally or through those we love, work with, and care for.

At Rowcroft Hospice, inclusivity isn’t just a principle we uphold – it’s at the heart of how we care for our patients, support families, and create a thriving workplace for our staff and volunteers. Every person who walks through our doors should feel valued, heard, and included – not because it’s an obligation, but because it’s the right thing to do. Compassion and dignity are at the core of everything we do, and that extends to the way we treat each other.

Creating a truly inclusive culture requires more than good intentions; it takes ongoing reflection, learning, and action. It means challenging unconscious biases, ensuring that our policies and practices are fair and equitable, and continuously listening to the voices of those who may feel forgotten or overlooked. It’s about celebrating diversity in all its forms and understanding that by embracing different perspectives and experiences, we strengthen our organisation and enhance the quality of care we provide.

As part of this commitment, Rowcroft Hospice is rolling out comprehensive Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) training across the organisation for staff. This training aims to deepen understanding, promote awareness, and embed inclusive practices at every level. It represents our dedication to fostering a workplace where everyone can thrive, regardless of their background.

We know that inclusivity is a journey, not a destination. There will always be more to learn, more to improve, and more ways to make our hospice and our wider community a place where everyone feels they truly belong. Together, we can build a culture that not only welcomes diversity but genuinely thrives because of it.

Thank you for being part of our journey towards a more inclusive and compassionate future.
