Amanda’s journey: Finding peace in the Meadow of Memories

Three weeks of loving care in Rowcroft’s Inpatient Unit

In July 2024, Phil Head was lovingly cared for in Rowcroft’s Inpatient Unit. By his side were his wife, Amanda; his daughter, Katie; and his granddaughter, Evie. Together, they spent three precious weeks at the hospice, cherishing their final moments with Phil as he neared the end of his life. During this difficult time, Amanda found moments of comfort and peace in the hospice’s beautiful grounds and the Meadow of Memories.

Finding moments of calm and strength

The hospice’s natural surroundings became a source of comfort for Amanda, offering her moments of calm and strength during an incredibly difficult time. “The Meadow of Memories was outstanding,” Amanda recalls. “It was so beautiful and peaceful. It made such a difference to how I was feeling during this journey and the surrounding beauty kept me going.”

Amanda also drew strength from the kindness of Rowcroft’s staff and volunteers:

“I would often step outside to talk with the volunteer gardeners and staff. They are all such wonderful, warm and caring people. The hospice’s support made an unbearable time feel a little more manageable.

“Before we needed the support and help of the hospice, I had no idea how amazing they are. Spending time at Rowcroft opened my eyes to how much they do, not only for patients, but for their loved ones too. I was able to stay by my husband’s side 24/7 throughout his final journey while they looked after me and our family just as much as they cared for Phil.”

Rowcroft’s Meadow of Memories

Inspired by the peace she found in the gardens and meadow, Amanda has chosen to make a donation and a dedication in memory of Phil at this year’s Meadow of Memories.

“For me, it helps him to live on in my memories, as part of the beautiful meadow and the peace it brings, as well as raising vital funds for the hospice.”

Supporting the hospice

“We need our local hospice, we could not have gone through this without them. I want others to be able to access this care and support when they need it. Rowcroft is essential to our community and we need to ensure it’s there for everyone.”

Amanda’s story is a touching reminder of the profound impact that Rowcroft and the Meadow of Memories have on patients and families facing some of life’s most challenging moments. By making a dedication, you too can honour your loved ones while helping to ensure that Rowcroft can continue providing essential care and support to those in need for years to come.
