The Big Tackle is back for 2027

Rowcroft Hospice’s much-loved fundraising event, The Big Tackle, is back for 2027 – bringing together hundreds of people for an eight-mile walk, plenty of rugby spirit and a chance to make a real difference to local families. Taking place on Saturday 13 March 2027, The Big Tackle is now open for sign-ups at thebigtackle.org.uk. Early-bird places cost just £20 for adults and £12 for children, with everyone receiving a free event t-shirt.

Eight-mile sponsored walk

The eight-mile sponsored walk takes participants through Torquay and along the coast, starting and finishing at Torquay Rugby Club. Once the walking is complete, the celebrations continue with a free pint and pasty and the live screening of the England v Scotland Six Nations rugby match.

Last March, more than 1,500 people took part in The Big Tackle, raising an incredible £150,000 – enough to fund more than 5,000 hours of specialist care during home visits by Rowcroft’s nurses.

Walk in memory of loved ones

Among those taking part in the event last year were Ian Lawrence from Torquay and his family, who walked in memory of Ian’s dad, Bob Lawrence. Bob was cared for at home by Rowcroft’s Hospice at Home Team before he died from stomach cancer in 2024.

“The fantastic support and care Dad received from Rowcroft meant that his last request could be fulfilled and he was able to spend his final days at home with his wife, Karen,” says Ian. “We will forever be grateful to Rowcroft for the excellent work they do. And I will do whatever I can to support the hospice to make sure others can get help when needed.”

Rowcroft Fundraiser Rachel Haime said:

“Ian’s story is a powerful reminder of why every step at The Big Tackle matters. Behind every pound raised is a family who may need Rowcroft’s support at one of the most difficult times in their lives – whether that’s helping someone to stay at home with the people they love, or caring for those with complex needs in our Inpatient Unit, or supporting those left behind with bereavement.

“For many people, The Big Tackle is a chance to remember someone special, just as Ian and his family did. It’s a day to walk, talk and share memories, while knowing that your fundraising will help another local family receive the care and support they need.

“And, of course, it’s a brilliant day out too! Whether you’re walking with friends, family or colleagues, there’s a fantastic atmosphere, beautiful coastal views and plenty of rugby fun along the way. Every step and every pound raised helps Rowcroft be there for local families when they need us most.”

With many participants walking in memory of loved ones, The Big Tackle offers an opportunity to come together, remember those who have died and find connection and support through shared experiences of grief.

An inclusive event open to all

The event is open to everyone aged eight and over and is proudly sponsored by WBW Solicitors, Torbay Clearance Services and Bays Brewery.

Early-bird prices are available until midnight on 7 December 2026, after which ticket prices will increase.

Entry fees cover the cost of putting on the event, while sponsorship and donations make the biggest difference to Rowcroft’s care. By raising or donating a minimum of £50, participants can help fund specialist end-of-life care for the 2,500 patients and their loved ones supported by Rowcroft across South Devon each year.

Funding challenges

With demand for hospice care continuing to grow, and rising costs putting increasing pressure on services, community support is more important than ever. According to Hospice UK, the national charity representing more than 200 hospices, nearly 60% of hospices have either made cuts or are considering reductions to frontline services, while 380 hospice beds are currently out of use across England because of the costs involved in delivering care.

The funding picture is particularly challenging for hospices in the South West. While hospices across England receive around 40% of their funding from the NHS on average, just 24% of Rowcroft’s income comes from NHS funding. That means the generosity of the local community plays a vital role in helping Rowcroft continue to provide specialist care to patients and their loved ones across South Devon.

By taking part in The Big Tackle, you’ll enjoy an unforgettable day out with friends, family or colleagues, while helping make sure local people can access the care and support they need when it matters most.
