Planning ahead with a dementia diagnosis

It is important to consider your future at any age and especially with conditions that are changing over time.

Start planning early- it can feel overwhelming, but taking small steps regularly can help you and those you love. Talk things through with your family or professionals/care team. Making decisions and sharing your wishes often brings peace of mind, especially choosing someone you trust to speak for you later. Experience tells us that asking and nominating people in advance to advocate for us is key to ensuring our wishes are respected and where your important information is stored.

The Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia UK have developed a range of information and resources e.g. specific planning ahead templates for use. There are also many recommended books for a range of dementia ages, perspectives and needs. Find out more by referring to the ACP (Advance Care Planning) sections on their websites:

There are also helplines for further support about planning ahead and generally about living with, or caring for, someone with a dementia. You can make an appointment with an Admiral nurse using Dementia UK’s Book a virtual clinic appointment. Or call the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia support line: 0333 150 2456
