Jackie Coles reflects on her dancing journey with Rowcroft
As the dazzling champion of Rowcroft’s Dancing Stars in 2019, Jackie Coles is shimmying back into the spotlight to help mentor the participants of this year’s ‘Strictly Rowcroft’ dancing extravaganza on 17 May, and to present the winner’s award on the big night. Here, Jackie reflects on her dance experience, offers advice to this year’s contestants, and shares how Rowcroft supported her family during their time of need.
Stepping onto the stage for Rowcroft
“I first became involved with Rowcroft in 2019 when I took part in Dancing Stars, but as a local, I’d always known about the hospice,” says Jackie. “Before this, my only dance experience had been in keep-fit classes, so learning from an experienced dancer was an incredible opportunity. Not only was I doing something I had always fancied trying, but it was all in support of a wonderful organisation. It was a win-win, and I was more than happy to take part.”
Dancing the journey together
“At first, my biggest fear was whether I’d be able to learn the dances. I had seen ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestants struggle, and I worried I’d make a complete fool of myself! I was also nervous about the atmosphere – what if the other participants were fiercely competitive? But as soon as the training started, I realised we were all experiencing the same fears. It was a lovely, supportive group, and our shared nerves quickly turned into encouragement. We would arrive early to watch each other train, have a chat, and cheer one another on. I’ve stayed friends with some of the other participants, and we still meet up for coffee, which is a lovely thing to have come from the experience. Even now, we still say it was one of the best things we’ve ever done!”
Ballroom glam
“I also loved getting all glammed up on the night in my amazing dresses. I actually made my black-and-white ballroom dress, which became a running joke with my friends – would I even finish it in time?! Sewing had been a hobby of mine, but this was by far the most challenging piece I’d ever attempted. The colours black-and-white matched the team colours of Torquay Rugby Club, where I was Chair at the time, and I still joke with the boys that it was the only cup we won that year! The experience inspired me to take an online ballroom dress sewing course during the pandemic – proof that Dancing Stars left a lasting impact in more ways than one!”
Rowcroft’s care
“My connection to Rowcroft deepened during the pandemic. When lockdown restrictions eased, I visited my grandparents and discovered my grandad had become quite poorly – something he hadn’t told anyone. Rowcroft’s Hospice at Home team stepped in, sending a wonderful nurse who provided both practical and emotional support. They ensured his end-of-life choices were fully respected. Rowcroft had always been close to his heart – he had supported them throughout his life – so it was moving that they were there for him when he needed them most.
“The care was exceptional. His nurse was incredibly knowledgeable and had a calm, reassuring presence. He was treated with such dignity, and we always had someone to turn to when we had questions or needed help. What made Rowcroft special in my eyes were the people – they cared deeply, not just for his physical needs but for his emotional and spiritual well-being too. As a former lay preacher, that meant the world to him. Their support was simply invaluable.”
Community spirit
“Through my connection with Rowcroft, I got to know even more people at the hospice. So when the charity approached Torquay Rugby Club about hosting The Male Trail (now The Big Tackle), I was all for it. We offered our grounds for the start and finish. I’ve attended The Big Tackle several times and am always amazed at the team’s organisation and friendliness. The warmth of Rowcroft’s staff extends across the whole organisation. I’ve met people from Rowcroft just once, and they’ve remembered me and stopped for a chat.”
Jackie’s dancing tips
“I’m so excited to be involved again. I can’t wait to watch this year’s participants and see them get the same amazing opportunity as I had. My practical advice for the current participants is to ask your experienced dancer to record your final routine – it’s so helpful to watch back and visualise what you’re aiming for. Learning takes time, so throw yourself into it and trust the process. Most importantly, enjoy every moment.
“What was truly lovely on the night was the incredible support in the room. As I stepped onto the dance floor, I could feel everybody willing me to do well. It’s a special experience, and when we met up on the first anniversary of Dancing Stars, we all agreed – we’d do it again in a heartbeat!”
