Meet Sally, one of Rowcroft’s wonderful retail volunteers
This Volunteers’ Week, we’re shining a light on the incredible volunteers who give so generously to support Rowcroft. One of those people is Sally Levy – a friendly face you’ll find in our Chelston Ella’s Café Lounge and shop. Since joining us in 2017, Sally has become a deeply valued member of the Rowcroft team, bringing warmth and care to customers. Here, she shares what volunteering means to her – and how giving back has given her so much in return.
A chance to give back
“I started volunteering for Rowcroft in 2017 at the Torquay shop,” says Sally. “More recently, I’ve been helping out at Ella’s Café Lounge and shop in Chelston. I retired earlier than expected, and when my good friend Laura, who works for Rowcroft, asked if I’d like to get involved, I thought I’d give it a go. It felt like a wonderful opportunity to give something back to the community.”
Sally’s day as a volunteer
“I volunteer in both the café and the shop. My day usually involves serving customers and clearing dishes in the café, or working on the till and keeping everything tidy and welcoming in the shop.
“What I enjoy most is interacting with customers. I love chatting with them; they often share incredible stories about their experiences with Rowcroft. I’ve really enjoyed building those connections – not just with customers, but also with the staff and fellow volunteers.”
A catwalk to remember
“One of the highlights of my volunteering journey was taking part in the Rowcroft fashion show last year. The event showcased the amazing range of second-hand clothes available in Rowcroft’s shops and online marketplace. A team of volunteers, including me, modelled the outfits on the night. It was a brilliant event and such a fun experience!”
Being valued and appreciated
“I think the work Rowcroft does is fantastic, and it’s a real privilege to know that my volunteering helps support such a wonderful cause. It’s a really supportive environment – I genuinely feel appreciated as a volunteer. One standout moment for me was being recognised for my long service. I was presented with a badge and some flowers, which made me feel truly valued and cared for. I never worry about coming in for a shift, because everyone is so friendly and quick to put you at ease if you ever have any doubts.”
Giving and receiving
“Volunteering has given me so much. I’ve made some wonderful friends, and we often meet up for a cup of tea and a chat. It’s a lovely feeling, knowing that you’re giving something back to your community. I’m truly grateful for the experience.”
