Jeremy’s barefoot half marathon challenge for Rowcroft

No shoes but lots of heart

When Jeremy Weiss lines up for the Torbay Half Marathon on Sunday 21 September, he’ll be doing so barefoot – a bold challenge inspired by his love of running, his passion for health and wellbeing, and his admiration for the compassionate care provided by Rowcroft Hospice. By stepping out of his comfort zone, Jeremy hopes to make a meaningful difference for local patients and their loved ones.

Jumping in feet first

“I’ve been running for about two and a half years,” says Jeremy. “I thought that running the half marathon completely barefoot might help boost my fundraising. It also felt like a real challenge – and I enjoy pushing myself and stepping outside my comfort zone. It’s been a lot of fun so far, and I’m really excited to be able to give back in this way.”

Inspired by Rowcroft’s care

“I had some friends who were cared for by Rowcroft, and when I visited them at the hospice, I greatly admired the work of the staff. It felt as though there was nothing they wouldn’t do to support both patients and their loved ones. Having already experienced hospice care with my grandad, although not at Rowcroft, I knew how important this kind of care is, and it felt like a great cause to support. I’m happy to do something small to help.”

A passion for health and wellbeing

“I’ve long been interested in health and wellbeing, and was inspired by the book Born to Run, which explores the idea that humans evolved to run long distances barefoot. It suggests that modern running shoes may actually contribute to common injuries, whereas our bodies are naturally designed for running. For me, running barefoot feels better.”

Training for the challenge

“I’ve run a half marathon before, but never completely barefoot. It’s meant toughening up my feet. I’m determined to take it on and finish, so I’ve been doing lots of training. My training has had its ups and downs – I’ve had my fair share of blisters! I’m a little nervous, but excited because I really do love running.”
