Hospitality Volunteers

Would you like to help us look after our patients and their loved ones?

Tea & Coffee Volunteer

Our Hospitality Volunteers are on the ward, serving refreshments and meals to our patients and their families and visitors.

Ensuring patients eat and drink well is vital to their wellbeing, and making sure visitors feel welcome is all part of Rowcroft’s holistic approach and you will play a critical part in this.

You would help prepare the hospitality trolley and depending on the time of the shift, help the catering staff serve lunches or evening meals (you will not be asked to help feed patients).

You can chat with patients and visitors and help create a friendly, social atmosphere as appropriate.

Ideally you are proactive and confident, and able to work alone once you feel comfortable in the role. You may at times meet people who are very unwell or distressed.

“I do a weekly meal-time shift on Thursday evenings. It’s a very easy routine to maintain and doesn’t take up too much time. I serve dinners, offer hot drinks and refill jugs of fresh water for patients, as well as other activities. I would absolutely encourage others to volunteer for the hospice. Whilst it may seem daunting and a big commitment, one session a week is very manageable, especially once you are into the routine of it. It is also very rewarding to volunteer at the hospice as you know that you can make a real difference to the lives of patients and their families.” Myles, Hospitality Volunteer

We have volunteers of all ages in this role – read more about Myles who is 18 and pursuing his dream of becoming a doctor. Full induction and training will be provided. If you’re not sure if this is for you, then you can always do a trial shift to see what’s really involved.

We have 4 shifts every day and we usually ask you to cover one shift per week for a weekday, or just one or two shifts per month if it’s a Saturday or Sunday (so not every weekend):

  • Morning 9.15am – 10.45am
  • Lunch 12pm – 2pm
  • Afternoon 2.30pm – 3.30pm
  • Supper 4.30pm – 6pm

We are particularly looking for volunteers to cover either our weekend or supper shifts.
